What is ESL?
ESL stands for English as a Second Language. It is used to describe students whose native language is not English and are in the process of learning English as their second language.
What can I do to help my child at home?
Glad you asked! :)
There are lots of things you can do at home with your student to help improve their English.
Students need to be reading at home at least twenty minutes a day. Here are some examples of things they could read:
- Books
- Magazines
- Food labels (such as on cereal)
- Newspapers
- Grocery Lists
Anything that has English on it they could read to you. As long as they're seeing the language they are growing.
Make sure too that you talk with your students. It can be in short sentences or just asking how their day went. Even if you don't understand all of it, it's good to have them speaking.
TECHNOLOGY
Here are some apps and websites that you could have your student on at home to improve their English.

WIDA Standards and Can Dos
In our classrooms we use both the state standards and the WIDA standards. Your student must have a 5 or above in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening in order to exit ESL. We use the Can Do descriptors to help guide our instruction in order to best serve your child. Below there are buttons with links to the standards and Can Do descriptors if you would like to have a closer look.
